De 70-jarige Joegoslaaf Zlatko Manojlovic aka Zed Mitchell is een bandleider, zanger, gitarist en componist. In Belgrado in 1970 werd hij beroepsmuzikant en in 1974 verscheen bij Polydor Europe zijn single “Shoshana”, die Zed met zijn band Land opnam. Door het succes van de single mocht hij openen voor bands als Focus, Deep Purple en Ian Gillan Band. In 1988 trok hij naar Duitsland om er te gaan werken in de Arco Studios in München. Daar werkte hij samen met producer Malcolm Luker en filmcomponist Nick Glennie-Smith, de rechterhand van tweevoudig Oscar winnaar Hans Zimmer. In die periode was Zed ook studiomuzikanten werkte zo in de studio samen met Eros Ramazotti, Natalie Cole en Udo Lindenberg. Van de cd 'Pop Goes Classic Vol. 5' van het bekende Munich Symphonic Sound Orchestra werden meer dan een miljoen exemplaren verkocht. Al het akoestisch en elektrisch gitaarwerk op dat album is van Zed Mitchell. Met zijn band speelde hij in het voorprogramma van Joe Cocker (1993), Santana (1993) en B.B. King, tijdens diens laatste tournee in Duitsland 2006. Zijn zoon Todor Manojlovic is ook een echte gitaarvirtuoos. Hij speelde zo’n 10 jaar samen met zijn vader in diens band.

Tussen 2010 en 2018 bracht Zed Mitchell vijf studio en één live album uit. Eind 2020 verscheen #7, 'Route 69', met daarop twaalf nieuwe originele nummers, waarvan de bekende muziekpromotor en radiostem Pete Feenstra voor vier songs de teksten schreef. 'Route 69' werd opgenomen in de Zed Mitchell Studio in Düsseldorf met Zed als producer. De band bestond verder uit zoon Todor Manojlovic op gitaar, David Haynes op drums, Sascha Kuhn op keys & Max Schurakowski op sax.

Zed Mitchell opent ‘Route 69’ met “By Sundown You'll Be Gone” een relaxte song (van Pete Feenstra) en melodie, Dire Straits invloeden, die daarna op “I Like to Drive” nog beter opvallen. De opener is het enige nummer waarop toetsenist Sascha Kuhn (op orgel) te horen is. Zed houdt het even sfeervol op het aanstekelige “I'm Still Waiting”, waarin ook nu weer de nodige solo’s niet mogen ontbreken. Mark Knopfler is ook weer aanwezig op de emotionele, wat trieste liefdesballade, “The Girl That Broke Your Heart”. Het wordt -terwijl misschien wel wat meer afwisseling mag- nog intenser op het dromerige “Freedom Trail” zonder dat de wah wah’s er geweld aan doen, wat melig op “From My Dreams” en blijft intiem op het jazzy “Midnight Melody”. “Is This Life” moet het hebben van een hoog Chris Rea gehalte en “Blue In Your Eyes” van de herinneringen. Get funky op “Life Will Always Find You” waarop vader en zoon ons laten genieten van hun gitaar harmonieën, om na af te sluiten met “Fake”. Het is een pessimistische finale, waarin Zed ons aanraadt van niet rond te kijken en van jezelf te blijven.

The Girl that Broke Your Heart: (4.17) A yearning love song on which the contrasting guitar tones and short piano embellishment perfectly evokes the emotion of the song - 05. Freedom Trail: (5.11) Zed adds some unexpected wah-wah to tighten the focus and emphasize and expansive feel to an uplifting song full of optimism - 06. From My Dreams: (4.14) A mediate piece with a poppy feel that delves in the subconscious - 07: Midnight Melody: (5.01) A beautifully crafted, brush stroked shuffle-led number, full gently whispered vocals and aching guitar tone - 08. Is This Life: (4.24) A lovely melody with a Chris Rea feel and an intricate solo full of resonant tone and an a cappella finish - 09.
